Kraken's Ledgers export is the best raw record any of our supported exchanges provides: one row for every balance change, with a reference id that pairs the two sides of each trade, and official documentation of every field. CryptoTaxCheck reads it directly — trades, Buy Crypto purchases, deposits, withdrawals, staking and Earn rewards, referral bonuses, airdrops and delistings — and turns Kraken's internal asset codes back into BTC, ETH and GBP. Below: how to export it, what we do with it, and the handful of things worth knowing before you import. Your file is read in your browser and never uploaded.

How to download your Kraken Ledgers export

These steps follow Kraken's help article for the Statement Center on Kraken Pro, last updated by Kraken on 10 August 2026 and checked by us on 27 September 2026.

  1. Sign in to Kraken Pro on the web and open Statements. Click your profile icon in the top-right corner and choose Statements from the menu.
  2. Start an export. In the Exports section, click Export Statement (top right).
  3. Choose the export type “Ledgers”. Not Trades, and not Account Statement: Ledgers includes deposits, withdrawals, fees and every other balance change, which is what UK pooling needs.
  4. Set the date range and filters. Cover your whole history from your first deposit; leave all assets selected and all fields included. Choose CSV as the file format.
  5. Click Export and wait. The request appears in the Exports list. Kraken says it can take from a few minutes to as long as a week, and it does not send an email when it is done.
  6. Download the file when the download icon appears. Save the CSV as it is and add it to the calculator. If you traded before 2024, your export may use an older column layout — we read those too.

What we read from the file

Everything in the ledger that changes your holdings. Trades appear as two rows sharing a refid; we pair them into one transaction with its fee. Buy Crypto purchases come through as spend and receive pairs and are read as buys. Deposits and withdrawals become transfers flagged for you to confirm, with withdrawal fees kept as a small disposal. Staking and Earn rewards, referral bonuses, airdrops and forks (Kraken's transfer rows), delisting conversions and adjustments are all imported with the right classification. Moving coins between your spot balance and staking or Earn is your own money changing pockets, so those rows are set aside as internal.

Margin, rollover and futures-wallet rows are outside what the calculator supports; they are kept, flagged as out of scope and excluded from the totals with a visible warning, so you know to take them to Koinly or an adviser. Kraken gives values in the fiat leg of each trade: pound trades need no price lookup, while crypto-to-crypto trades are valued through our price service using only the coin and the date.

Common gotchas

  • Asset codes. XXBT and XBT are bitcoin, XETH is ether, XXDG is dogecoin, ZGBP is pounds and ZEUR euros. We normalise all of them. Staking sub-balances such as DOT.S, ETH2.S, SOL03.S and USD.M are folded into the base asset — they are your own coins, not different tokens.
  • Negative fees. Fees in 2024 and later exports can be negative. We take the absolute value and keep the fee in the row's own asset.
  • Empty txid. Rows with no transaction id are failed or pending entries with no balance change; we ignore them.
  • UTC timestamps with fractions. time is UTC and may carry fractional seconds. Spreadsheets often hide the date part or round the time — if a file has been through Excel, re-download it rather than re-saving.
  • Renamed columns over the years. Kraken has renamed staking to earn and added wallet and subclass columns. Each header layout is a separate format below; a layout we have not seen is refused with a hint instead of being misread.
  • Trades export alongside Ledgers. Accepted, but every trade would then be counted twice. We warn when both are present; import only Ledgers.

Kraken is the only exchange in our launch set that documents every export field officially, and the layouts above were checked against those articles and against real anonymised exports.

What happens after import?

The import review screen lists rows read, the date range, anything left for you to classify and the deposits and withdrawals waiting to be confirmed as transfers between your own accounts. Add your other exchanges' files at the same time so those pairs can be matched automatically. Each disposal is then matched under HMRC's same-day, 30-day and section 104 pool rules, with the rule shown, and you get gains, losses, income and estimated tax for every tax year you select.

Frequently asked questions

Should I export Kraken Ledgers or Trades for UK tax?
Ledgers. It contains every balance change — trades, deposits, withdrawals, fees, staking and Earn rewards — so it is the complete record HMRC’s pooling rules need. The Trades export only covers trades. We accept it too, but importing both duplicates your trades, and we warn you if you do.
What do XXBT, XETH and ZGBP mean in a Kraken export?
They are Kraken’s internal asset codes: an X prefix for crypto (XXBT is bitcoin, XETH is ether) and a Z prefix for fiat (ZGBP is pounds, ZEUR is euros). We translate them to the usual tickers, so you see BTC and GBP on the review screen.
Why are some Kraken fees negative?
Exports from 2024 onwards can show fees as negative numbers. We take the absolute value, and we keep the fee in the currency of the row it sits on — a GBP fee on the pound leg of a trade, a crypto fee on the coin leg.
How long does a Kraken export take?
Kraken says export requests can take from a few minutes up to a week, and that it does not email you when one is ready. Check the Statements page and download the file when the download icon appears.
