Not tax advice
CryptoTaxCheck is an information and calculation tool. The guides on this site explain how HMRC's published rules work in general terms, and the calculator applies those rules to the transaction data you provide. None of it is personal tax, legal, accounting or financial advice, and none of it takes account of your individual circumstances. We are not tax advisers and we do not review your figures.
You are responsible for your tax return
The results the calculator produces are estimates based on the files and information you supply and the choices you confirm during import. Their accuracy depends on the completeness and accuracy of that data. You are responsible for checking the results, for deciding what to report to HMRC, for filing on time and for paying any tax due. Keep your own records: HMRC expects you to.
When to get professional advice
Speak to a qualified UK tax adviser (for example a Chartered Tax Adviser or a member of the ATT, ACCA or ICAEW) before relying on our output if any of these apply: you used DeFi lending or liquidity pools, NFTs, margin or futures; you may be trading as a business; you are or were non-UK resident, or your residence changed part way through a year; you received crypto from an employer; the sums involved are significant; you are responding to an HMRC enquiry or compliance check rather than a nudge letter; or you think HMRC might regard any past behaviour as deliberate. The disclosure process in particular asks you to characterise your own behaviour, and that judgement deserves professional input.
Independence from HMRC
CryptoTaxCheck is independent. It is not affiliated with, approved by, recognised by or endorsed by HM Revenue and Customs or any other government body. HMRC does not approve tax software or calculators for cryptoassets. References to HMRC and GOV.UK on this site are to their published guidance, which we link to so that you can read the source yourself.
Accuracy and changes
We take care to keep the site accurate and to cite the current gov.uk and HMRC Cryptoassets Manual pages, and each guide shows the date it was last reviewed. Tax law and HMRC guidance change, sometimes with immediate effect, and we cannot promise that every page reflects the latest position at the moment you read it. Where a guide describes draft or proposed measures, they may change before becoming law. If you spot an error, please tell us.
No promises about outcomes
We make no promises about the tax, interest or penalties HMRC will or will not charge in your case. Penalties depend on facts and judgements — about behaviour, disclosure and the quality of your records — that are for you and HMRC, and we explain the published ranges rather than predicting your result.
Affiliate links
Some pages contain labelled affiliate links to third-party software. We may earn a commission if you buy through them; this does not affect the price you pay or our editorial judgement. See our affiliate disclosure.
Legal effect
This disclaimer forms part of our terms of use and should be read with them. Nothing in it affects your statutory rights as a consumer.
